Pune, 19th July 2025: As the indefinite protest by gig workers and transport unions intensifies at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, commuters in Pune are facing growing hardships due to a noticeable drop in rickshaw and cab availability and widespread complaints of inflated fares. The protest, which entered its second day today, has drawn participation from Pune-based drivers, further straining local transport infrastructure.

The strike, spearheaded by gig worker unions across Maharashtra, is demanding the implementation of state-approved fare rates for ride aggregator platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. The protesters are calling for these rates to be enforced through a centralized online system to ensure uniform pricing and fair compensation for drivers.

Many rickshaw and cab drivers from Pune have reportedly travelled to Mumbai to join the agitation. As a result, key transport hubs in the city—including Pune Railway Station, Swargate, Wakadewadi MSRTC Depot, and Lohegaon Airport—are witnessing a drop in vehicle availability, leaving passengers struggling to secure rides.

Commuters Report Arbitrary Fare Demands:
The shortage has led to allegations of overcharging by drivers still operating in the city. Though no formal complaints have yet been lodged, several passengers have raised concerns about being quoted fares far above standard meter rates.

Some reported examples include:
-₹60–₹70 from Pune Station to Shivajinagar
-₹100–₹150 to Swargate
-₹180–₹200 from Wakadewadi to Swargate
-₹700 flat for rides from Lohegaon Airport to any destination
-₹250–₹300 charged by private cab drivers for short distances

“I was asked for ₹350 to reach Mitramandal Chowk from Pune Station. After negotiating, I paid ₹300—but that’s still twice the usual rate,” said one of the commuters traveling with luggage.

Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale acknowledged the issue and urged citizens to report instances of excessive fare demands. “Drivers are expected to operate by the meter. If any overcharging is observed, passengers should report it immediately. Our special enforcement team is ready to act,” he said.
