Pune: Case Registered Against Nilesh Chavan for Cruelty Towards Vaishnavi Hagawane’s 10-Month-Old Baby

Bavdhan, 24th May 2025: Nilesh Chavan has been named as an accused in the Vaishnavi Hagawane death case, with charges including cruelty toward Vaishnavi’s 10-month-old baby.
Following Vaishnavi’s death on 16th May, allegedly after enduring years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband and in-laws, driven by dowry demands and character suspicions after her pregnancy, the baby was reported missing. It was later discovered that the child was in the custody of Nilesh Chavan, a maternal cousin of Shashank Hagawane (Vaishnavi’s husband) and a known goon.
When Vaishnavi’s family, the Kaspates, went to retrieve the child, Chavan allegedly threatened them with a revolver. However, as the case gained public attention and became high-profile, the baby was handed over at the Mhalunge Police Chowky by some members of Chavan’s family and subsequently returned to Vaishnavi’s parents.
Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, revealed that the child had reportedly been subjected to cruelty.
A case has now been registered against Nilesh Chavan under Sections 75 and 87 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Multiple police teams are currently searching for him.
Senior Police Inspector Anil Vibhute, in-charge of Bavdhan Police Station, told Punekar News, “A case under Sections 75 and 87 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 has been registered against Nilesh Chavan. We have deployed teams to locate and arrest him.”
