Pune: Construction Work Of Bhide Wada Memorial Begins; Rs 7.5 Crores To Be Spent To Make It National Monument
Budhwar Peth, 10th September 2024: The construction of the memorial of the Bhide Wada, the first school for girls in the country, has started without a groundbreaking ceremony. At present the work of soil inspection is going on and after Ganeshotsav the said work will speed up.
Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule started the first school for girls in the country at this place in 1848. For many years agitations were held to make this place a national monument. In this regard, the land owners had filed a petition in the court against the land acquisition. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took over this place after fighting for it in the Supreme Court.
The groundbreaking ceremony was to be done before the Lok Sabha elections. But how should the monument be erected, and how to make it a historical construction, were considered. For this, many designs were called from the architect. But the decision was delayed as there was no consensus on it. Finally, a plan was finalized and the tender process was implemented. It is reported that about Rs 7.5 crores will be spent on this monument.
A grand program of the groundbreaking ceremony of the memorial was to be held, in which prominent leaders of the state were to be present. But this plan has been canceled. Following the instructions of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the PMC started the work on the Bhide Wada memorial last week.
