Chakan, 16th January 2025: More details are emerging about the road incident on Pune District’s Chakan-Shikrapur Road, where a container truck collided with 7-8 vehicles in an attempt to evade law enforcement. In this incident, a minor girl and a woman were seriously injured. The container driver, reportedly drunk, was severely beaten by the public when he was stopped and sustained serious injuries as well.

The accused driver has been identified as Aquib Khan, a resident of Haryana. After receiving preliminary treatment at the Rural Hospital in Shikrapur, he has been transferred to Sassoon General Hospital. Medical tests are still pending to determine whether he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Meanwhile, the injured girl and woman are now out of danger and receiving treatment at a private hospital. A case has been registered against the driver with the Pimpri Chinchwad Police.

What Exactly Happened On Chakan-Shikrapur Road Today?

At approximately 12:30 PM, a container truck with registration number HR HV 2283 was driving recklessly, disregarding traffic rules. The truck collided with a two-wheeler carrying three people: two women and an 11-year-old girl. The women were injured upon impact, while the girl suffered severe injuries when the container’s wheel ran over her leg. Instead of stopping, the container truck continued towards Shikrapur, maintaining its reckless driving. The Chakan Police Station, under the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate (PCPC), was alerted about the incident. As the truck fled, it collided with another four-wheeler, initiating a dramatic police chase.

The police attempted to stop the container truck seven times, but the driver managed to evade capture each time. In one instance, the truck sped towards a Police’s Maruti Suzuki Ertiga vehicle and collided with it. Assistant Police Inspector Nyamne narrowly escaped, but a Traffic Warden inside the vehicle was injured.

The container truck was finally intercepted in Wajewadi, within the jurisdiction of Shikrapur Police Station, which falls under the Pune Rural Police Force. Police Inspector Deepratan Gaikwad, in charge of Shikrapur Police Station, reported that a dumper was used to stop the truck. Before the police could reach the driver, an angry mob of approximately 100-150 people caught up with him and severely beat him, resulting in injuries.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Dr. Shivaji Pawar confirmed that the truck had crashed into at least seven vehicles before being apprehended, with investigations ongoing to determine if there were more collisions. Eyewitnesses reported that the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Chakan Division) Rajendra Singh Gaur provided details about the initial accident and the truck’s failure to stop.

Police Inspector Deepratan Gaikwad told Punekar News, “The driver was stopped at Wajewadi and has been shifted to Sassoon General Hospital. The Medical Officer informed us that while he is stable, his injuries are serious. A crowd of around 100-150 people reached him before we did, chasing him on two-wheelers. He was finally stopped with the help of dumpers. None of our officers are injured.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Chakan Division) Rajendra Singh Gaur told Punekar News, “The woman and the 11-year-old girl are undergoing treatment at a private hospital but are out of danger. The traffic warden also received treatment and is now stable. The road is always busy with heavy traffic, but we managed to clear it efficiently soon after the driver was detained. Further investigation is underway.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Dr. Shivaji Pawar said, “The truck first hit a car and then collided with other vehicles during the chase. It has been confirmed that seven vehicles were hit. We are investigating whether there was any additional damage. The driver has been sent for a medical test to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol.”
