Pune: Cooler Sales Sluggish Despite Rising Temperatures
Pune, 29th March 2025: Despite temperatures soaring to 40°C, the demand for air coolers in Pune remains unexpectedly low. While various models are available in the market, Punekars have shown a lukewarm response to purchasing them this year. Shopkeepers note that last March was even hotter, leading to higher sales compared to this season.
Typically, summer sets in after Holi, and three weeks have passed since its onset. This winter was relatively mild, with February temperatures exceeding 35°C in many areas. By the end of March, several regions had already breached the 40°C mark.
Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted an unusually intense summer, and Maharashtra has already recorded a heatstroke-related fatality. In response, the state government has instructed agencies to prepare for heat waves. Since air conditioners remain out of reach for many households, air coolers are considered the preferred alternative.
Despite this, cooler sales are currently at only 70% of last year’s levels. Shopkeepers remain optimistic that demand will rise as temperatures continue to climb. The market has also seen a surge in Nagpuri coolers, which are gaining popularity for their superior cooling at a lower price than branded options.
“Although coolers are selling, demand is lower than last year. Customers prefer Nagpuri coolers because they provide better cooling at an affordable price,” said a shopkeeper.
Another vendor from the electronics market added, “Nagpuri coolers are cost-effective and offer stronger cooling than branded ones, though they require more maintenance. While branded coolers are more durable, customers this year are prioritizing affordability over longevity.”
