Pune, June 19, 2020: A couple belonging to the opposition party in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had travelled to Mumbai to meet Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The couple’s swab samples were collected for COVID test on June 15 and instead of waiting for the reports they travelled to Mumbai.

Now politicians are under shock on knowing that the senior leader of the opposition and his wife have tested positive for Covid-19. Leaders from opposition parties have received calls from PMC to stay under home quarantine for a few days and undergo testing if necessary. The couple were admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday (June 17).

All of these leaders had travelled to Mumbai to meet Deputy CM Pawar to discuss the road widening projects in Pune. They had gone in the hope of getting the PMC proposal to widen the roads, scrapped by Pawar as his party, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is among the ruling alliance in the state. The decision to widen the roads was taken by PMC, where Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is in power.

The couple disobeyed norms to stay in quarantine until the reports arrive and travelled to Mumbai. If the political leaders fail to follow norms and risk the safety of people then it is a big matter of concern. They should be socially responsible. In such grave times, when Covid-19 is at its peak, rules, regulations and precautionary measures must be followed with the utmost sincerity.

The leader who tested positive for Covid-19 insisted that he had visited a private hospital before travelling to Mumbai to get his periodic check-up of blood pressure. He went for a test on June 16th and since everything was fine he and his wife left for Mumbai on the same day. They started to feel sick later and on June 17th they got the report that they had tested positive for Coronavirus and were admitted in a private hospital.
