Pune Customs Commissionerate celebrates International Customs Day, 2020

Pune, January 27, 2020: The Customs Commissionerate, Pune celebrated International Customs Day, 2020 today.

Vasa Seshagiri Rao, the Chief Commissioner of CGST and Customs, Pune Zone who presided over the function, introduced the theme for International Customs Day this year “Contribution of Customs towards a sustainable future where social, economic, health and environmental needs are at the heart of our action, with the slogan “Customs fostering sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”.

The Chief Guest of the function Dr. Afroz Ahmad, highly acclaimed Environmental Scientist and Advisor to the Maharashtra State Government on Environment, Forest, Human Resettlement and Rehabilitation Affairs in his key note address lauded Customs department in their efforts in safeguarding the economic and the ecological wealth of the nation, especially, the strong implementation of global ban on import of Ozone depleting substances, CITES Convention that bans illegal cross border trade of endangered flora and fauna. He emphasised the importance of coordination between agencies such as Customs, Forests and Police in achieving larger interest of protecting the environment.

The Guest of Honour Vivek Khandekar, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Territorial), Pune, while emphasising on the need for sustainable development, advocated inter-departmental convergence in achieving the same.

During the celebration, Dr. Afroz Ahmad, the Chief Guest released “Seema Tarangini”, the in-house Hindi magazine of Pune Customs digitally, as an e-book and audio-book, in line with this year’s theme. A short film titled “Pune Customs – Sadaiva Agragamanam” depicting the multidimensional role played by Pune Customs was also released by the Chief Commissioner, CGST & Customs, Pune Zone.

The trade, the stake holders and various government organisations were felicitated for their active support and cooperation. The officers and staff were awarded commendation certificates for their meritorious and outstanding performance.

The celebrations concluded with a vote of thanks by Vaishali Patange, joint commissioner, Customs, Pune.
