Pune: Deserter Army Jawan Arrested For Cheating Through Demonetised Currency Notes

Pune, 2nd May 2021: The Crime Branch of Pune city police has arrested a 36-year-old deserter Army Jawan for allegedly cheating a man to a tune of Rs four lakh under the pretext of changing demonetised currency notes.

The arrested person has been identified as Naik Annasaheb Arjun Dhaytidak, a native of Barshi taluka in Solapur district, who resided here in Range Hills Estate. His accomplice Nawab Ali of Sanjay Park is wanted in the case.

Acting on a tip-off received by ASI Tanaji Kamble of the Anti-Vehicle Theft squad, Dhaytidak was picked up on Friday. Police recovered currency notes with a face value of Rs 24.35 lakh which includes 56 demonetised currency notes of Rs 1000 denomination and notes of ‘Bharatiya Manoranjan Bank’ and other fake notes in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. Police have also seized a Tata Safari vehicle in which some of the notes were kept.

An FIR has been registered against in this regard at Khadki police station for offences under sections 489B (using forged or counterfeit currency-notes as genuine), 420 (cheating) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017.

According to police, the accused used to show the seized notes to gain the confidence of people for converting demonetised notes with genuine Rs 2000 notes. They used to show a video of huge bundles of notes with demonetised notes kept on top of the fake notes. They would look for a person to search for any bank employee for the deal. The accused took a commission for the purpose and cheated people. They had cheated a person of Rs four lakh commission who informed the police about the cheating racket.
