Pune: District Collector Reviews Traffic and Infrastructure Issues in Chakan, Hinjawadi
Pune, 1st October 2026: Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi on Thursday reviewed ongoing and proposed measures to address traffic congestion and infrastructure-related issues in the Chakan and Hinjawadi industrial areas through a high-level task force committee.
The review meeting focused on traffic congestion, potholes, stormwater drainage, encroachments on drains, road widening, planning of junctions and U-turns, and public transport facilities in the two major industrial corridors.
Resident Deputy Collector and committee member-secretary Jyoti Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikrant Deshmukh, and officials from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), municipal corporations, police, highways and other departments attended the meeting at the District Collector’s office.
Dudi directed the concerned agencies to remove encroachments, complete necessary surveys and keep detailed plans and procedures ready for the proposed infrastructure works.
Survey of drains and removal of encroachments
Dudi directed officials to conduct a survey of drains in the Chakan area and initiate action against encroachments. He said temporary encroachments should be removed immediately, while action should be taken against unauthorised constructions as per the rules to clear the drainage channels.
In cases where construction has been carried out with the necessary permissions, officials were directed to identify suitable land and plan alternative routes for diverting the drains.
MIDC and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have been asked to survey drains within their respective jurisdictions and compile details of encroachments.
The administration also stressed the need to consider current traffic volumes, vehicle movement patterns and projected future growth while finalising road designs.
Traffic data to guide U-turn and junction planning
Officials were directed to study traffic data and use traffic simulation models while planning dividers, U-turns and junctions on national highways.
The administration said authorised U-turns and junctions should be provided only at locations where they are necessary to maintain smooth traffic movement.
The meeting also reviewed the use of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) and traffic simulation for traffic planning. Officials discussed incorporating traffic management requirements into road designs rather than addressing congestion only after roads are constructed.
Potholes and stormwater drainage
The concerned agencies were directed to undertake necessary repairs to potholes on roads in Chakan and Hinjawadi.
The meeting emphasised that merely filling potholes would not provide a long-term solution. Officials were directed to develop an effective stormwater drainage system to ensure proper disposal of rainwater and prevent recurring damage to roads.
Action against unauthorised parking and bus stops
Officials also discussed congestion caused by buses and other vehicles stopping at unauthorised locations along national highways and service roads.
Police authorities were directed to ensure that buses and other vehicles stop only at designated bus stops and planned bus depots, and to take action against unauthorised stops and parking.
Issues related to pipelines involving Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and other agencies, as well as river pollution, were also reviewed during the meeting.
Dudi further directed officials to immediately resume the anti-encroachment drive that had been suspended during Ganeshotsav and make the required land available for infrastructure works.
Senior officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
