Pune District to Combat Landslides with Rs 200 Crore Fund for Retaining Walls, Drainage Control
Pune, 7th January 2025: The Centre has sanctioned ₹200 crore for landslide mitigation efforts across more than 50 villages in Pune district’s Bhor, Velhe, Ambegaon, Junnar, Maval, and Khed tehsils. The measures come in response to concerns raised by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) following surveys conducted over the past few years.
Vitthal Banote, the district disaster management officer, explained the urgency of the project. “The Geological Survey of India has identified these villages as highly vulnerable to landslides. The proposed measures include the construction of retaining walls, slope reduction, and better drainage systems to control water flow and minimize landslide risks,” he said.
The state’s Public Works Department (PWD) will oversee the execution of the project, which is expected to be completed before the onset of the monsoon season.
Pune district has witnessed devastating landslides in the past, including the deadly incident in Malin village, Ambegaon, in 2014, where 151 people tragically lost their lives.
In addition to addressing landslide-prone areas, GSI experts have also recommended the permanent relocation of several vulnerable villages. However, this proposal is still awaiting approval from the state government, according to local officials.
A senior geologist who previously visited Malin village emphasized the importance of swift action. “This year, new cracks appeared in one of the hamlets in Malin village. Rainwater is seeping into the slope through these cracks, which could trigger a landslide if not addressed. If the local administration delays action, it will become increasingly difficult to prevent potential disasters,” he warned.
