Pune, 14th October 2026: Five villages and 53 hamlets in Pune district are currently receiving water through tankers to tackle rural water scarcity, benefiting approximately 18,650 residents, according to the Zilla Parishad’s Rural Water Supply Department.

Eight tankers are being deployed for the supply, with Baramati, Daund and Indapur talukas among the areas where tanker services are currently operational. The administration is monitoring the situation and approving additional tankers as required.

The district has recorded an average rainfall of 819 mm so far, approximately 95% of its average rainfall. Despite the rainfall, water scarcity persists in parts of the rural district, prompting the administration to continue emergency water supply measures.

294 new borewell projects approved
To strengthen water availability in rural areas, the administration has approved 294 new borewell projects, with approximately ₹2.49 crore allocated for the work. The department reported that drilling of all the borewells under these projects has been completed.

Additionally, 611 borewell repair works have been approved, with an estimated allocation of ₹2.56 crore. The repairs are expected to help restore defunct borewells and improve the capacity of those supplying inadequate water.

The administration is also acquiring private wells and borewells where necessary to maintain water supply in scarcity-affected areas. Most tanker trips are being completed according to schedule, the department said.

₹5.36 crore sanctioned for repairs and water source strengthening
The government has granted administrative approval for special repairs to 33 rural piped water supply schemes. Approval has also been given for 10 water-source strengthening works and 21 projects involving well deepening and desilting.

A total of approximately ₹5.36 crore has been sanctioned for these works.
The department also reported the completion of works under the regional water supply schemes at Morgaon, Regional Bele and Regional Shivri.
