Pune: Doctor who treated COVID patients, dies due to Coronavirus

Pune, May 23, 2020: A 56-years-old doctor from Keshavnagar, died while undergoing treatment for COVID19 at Sassoon General Hospital yesterday. The deceased Dr Sanjay Shelar practised in Ghorpadi. He died due to respiratory failure and respiratory illness due to COVID19 in Sassoon General hospital on 22 May evening. He also had kidney and heart-related problems.

According to health department officials, he was a general practitioner running a private OPD hospital in the city and had quarantined himself after two of his patients were found Coronavirus positive. After 14 days of quarantine, he started facing breathing issues, there he went for COVID19 test. The report came positive and he was admitted to the hospital.

He was shifted to Sassoon General hospital for further treatment on 13th  May. He had to be put on ventilator support later after his health became critical. He was the first in Pune district to be administered Tocilizumab, an immuno-suppressive drug used mainly for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and now it is also being used against Coronavirus. The number of Coronavirus patients has reached 5200 in Pune district and half of them have been successfully cured. Till now 257 patients have died.
