Pune: DPR for Proposed Tunnels Between Shaniwarwada and Swargate to Be Ready in Six Months
Pune, 30th March 2025: The detailed project report (DPR) for two underground tunnels aimed at decongesting the bustling Shivaji and Bajirao roads is expected to be completed within the next six months. The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) is currently preparing the report, which will assess the feasibility and technical aspects of the tunnels.
Kasba Peth MLA Hemant Rasne stated that the project is being planned with a focus on improving traffic flow in the old city areas. “These tunnels will be strategically aligned to ease congestion in the city’s core. The PWD has been asked to explore the feasibility of multiple entry and exit points along the route. The total project cost will be determined once the DPR is finalized,” he explained.
The two roads under consideration—Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road—are among Pune’s busiest, often experiencing severe traffic jams. Ajay Tikhe, a trader from the Mandai area, highlighted the daily challenges faced by commuters. “These roads are not just commercial hubs but also have several schools nearby. The administration must take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
According to Rasne, one of the proposed tunnels will connect Shaniwarwada to Swargate, while the other will link Shaniwarwada to Sarasbaug. “These tunnels are planned to be constructed approximately 22 meters underground,” he added.
Addressing concerns about potential interference with the Shivajinagar-Swargate Metro line, Rasne clarified that there would be no conflict between the projects. “The Metro tunnel is being constructed 30 meters below the surface, whereas the proposed road tunnels will be positioned at a depth of 22 meters. The DPR will provide a clearer understanding of the technical aspects,” he said.
In the meantime, to mitigate traffic congestion on Shivaji and Bajirao roads, Rasne stated that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and traffic police have been directed to take strict action against illegal encroachments and unauthorized parking along the routes.
