Pune: Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla Honoured as The Bishop’s School Dedicates Foot Over Bridge in His Name

Camp, 17th April 2025: The Bishop’s School, Camp, marked a historic milestone on Wednesday, 16th April 2025, with the dedication of its newly constructed Foot Over Bridge (FOB), a vital addition to campus infrastructure. In a gesture of immense pride and gratitude, the FOB was officially dedicated to Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, the eminent industrialist, philanthropist and proud alumnus of The Bishop’s School. This tribute acknowledges not only his stellar contributions to global healthcare but also his unwavering support for the institution that helped shape his early years.

The dedication ceremony, held at the Camp branch, was graced by several distinguished dignitaries, including the President of The Bishop’s Education Society, Mr Rudolf Woodman, Principals of the Kalyani Nagar and Undri branches, members of the Governing Body and respected members of the wider school community.

The morning began on a reverent note with an opening prayer led by Zainab Poonawala, setting the tone for what unfolded into a meaningful and heartfelt celebration. The day’s proceedings were compered with charm and efficiency by Mustafa Ginwala, keeping the event flowing with grace.

Principal Shayne McPherson extended a warm welcome to all present, emphasizing the significance of the bridge, not just as a structure, but as a symbol of the school’s commitment to student safety, accessibility and long-term growth.

The highlight of the morning was the keynote address by Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman and Managing Director of the Cyrus Poonawalla Group, which includes the globally renowned Serum Institute of India. With characteristic humility and warmth, Dr. Poonawalla reminisced about his formative days at The Bishop’s School and spoke of the deep affection he continues to hold for his alma mater. He fondly remembered the late A. E. Lunn, a former Principal of the school, under whose leadership high standards of discipline and excellence were maintained. Dr. Poonawalla urged the present generation to emulate that same spirit and uphold the values and traditions that have long defined The Bishop’s School.

The school choir lent a soulful atmosphere to the event, delivering stirring performances of “For the Good” and “The King is in the Room,” both of which underscored the emotional depth of the occasion.

A defining moment was the unveiling of the commemorative plaque by Dr. Poonawalla, joined by the other dignitaries. This ceremonial act formally marked the dedication of the foot over bridge in his name, a gesture that will serve as an enduring inspiration to generations of Bishopites.
