Pune Earns Rs 28 Crore Central Grant Under AMRUT 2.0 for Sewage Treatment Excellence

Pune, 1st June 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has secured a ₹28 crore grant from the Central Government under the AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme, in recognition of its outstanding performance in sewage treatment initiatives.
Eight of PMC’s sewage treatment projects received four-star ratings, while the Mundhwa project earned the highest five-star rating, leading to the grant from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The rating was based on biannual inspections assessing operational efficiency, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, sanitation audits, safety protocols, and adherence to National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines.
Manisha Shekatkar, head of PMC’s electricity department, stated that the five-star rated project will receive ₹4 crore, while each of the four-star projects will get ₹3 crore, amounting to a total grant of ₹28 crore. “The funds will be used exclusively to upgrade sewage treatment technologies and promote cleaner, more efficient wastewater management,” she said.
PMC currently treats and recycles wastewater before releasing it into the river, with STPs spread across the city. In addition, under a ₹1,000 crore Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project, 10 sewage treatment plants have been constructed to meet the city’s increasing demand.
Older STPs are also being upgraded to comply with the latest central norms, with a focus on automation, real-time monitoring, and improved water quality standards.
Civic officials said the grant is a major boost to Pune’s sustainable urban infrastructure, reaffirming PMC’s commitment to environmental compliance and public health.
