Pune: Eight More PMC Schools Set for Private Management Under 9-Year Contract
Pune, 8th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the process of handing over the management of eight more civic schools to a private organisation for nine years, continuing its move towards involving private institutions in running municipal education.
Under the proposal placed before the standing committee, the PMC will spend Rs 29,000 per student annually and take on the financial liability for the next nine years. The eight schools currently operate from PMC buildings and have around 2,293 students enrolled.
The schools were earlier being supported through CSR funding by ITech Movement, which covered the salaries of teachers and staff. However, the organisation is expected to lose around Rs 14 crore in CSR funding from 2026-27 and has sought financial assistance from the civic body. The PMC currently provides uniforms and educational material to students through direct benefit transfer (DBT). With the CSR funding set to end, the financial burden of running the schools will now shift to the civic body. The proposal states that the municipal commissioner has given in-principle approval to the request.
The PMC has already handed over five schools to the Akanksha Foundation and is now moving to transfer eight more to a private organisation. The move has raised questions among teachers and social sector representatives over whether the civic body should strengthen its own education system instead of outsourcing school management while taking on a long-term financial commitment.
Concerns have also been raised over the nine-year contract and the possibility of increased payments in line with inflation, with questions over the long-term financial implications for the civic body.
The eight schools are Krantiveer Lahuji Vastad Salve School in Yerawada, Sant Gadge Maharaj English School in Kondhwa, Punyashlok Ahilyadevi School in Aundh, Late Vitthalrao Tupe School in Hadapsar, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj School in Mundhwa, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay School in Kothrud, Acharya Vinoba Bhave School in Ganj Peth and Samrat Ashok Vidyamandir in Karvenagar.
