Pune FDA Begins Sampling Cough Syrups After Deaths Linked to ‘Coldrif’ in Madhya Pradesh
Pune, 7th October 2025: Following reports of the deaths of several children in Madhya Pradesh allegedly caused by the consumption of Coldrif cough syrup, the Pune division of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun collecting samples of cough syrups from various medical stores across the city as a precautionary measure.
The samples, sourced from different pharmaceutical companies, will be sent to a government laboratory for testing to detect any harmful substances. The move comes after the Maharashtra FDA imposed a ban on the sale and use of Coldrif syrup, which was manufactured by Sertion Pharma, based in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
Officials suspect that the syrup may contain Diethylene Glycol (DEG), a toxic chemical known to cause severe poisoning, kidney failure, and even death if ingested. The same compound has been linked to several past incidents of medicine-related fatalities in India and abroad.
Ashwin Thackeray, Assistant Commissioner of the FDA (Pune Division), said, “As a precautionary measure, and following instructions from the state FDA, we have started collecting samples of cough syrups from other manufacturers available in Pune medical stores. There is no stock of Coldrif syrup in Pune. Drug sellers have been instructed to immediately report if any stock is found. So far, no reports have been received.”
He further added that, based on initial findings, Coldrif syrup has not been distributed in Pune or elsewhere in Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, Anil Belkar, Secretary of the Chemist Association of Pune District, expressed concern over the sale of unregulated medicines through online platforms. “Due to online drug sales, fake or substandard medicines are being circulated, and the government has little control over such practices. Strict action should be taken against these companies. Licensed chemists sell medicines only against valid doctor prescriptions,” he said.
The FDA has urged citizens and pharmacists to remain alert and report any stock or sale of Coldrif or similar suspicious products immediately to the nearest FDA office.
