Pune, 18th August 2016: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched a crackdown on hotels and food establishments violating food safety and hygiene norms, with the licence of a restaurant in Lohgaon suspended with immediate effect after serious deficiencies were found during an inspection.

The FDA inspected ‘Chul Mutton’ at Jakat Naka in Khandwe Nagar, Lohgaon, on Nagar Road and found that the establishment was not meeting the required hygiene and health standards. Citing serious lapses related to food safety and sanitation, the department suspended its licence and directed the restaurant not to resume operations until corrective measures are implemented.

Meanwhile, the FDA’s Pune division seized prohibited food products, including gutkha worth Rs 10.07 lakh, during enforcement drives conducted between August 14 and 17.

Three cases were registered in connection with the seizures and seven people were arrested. Two establishments were also sealed. A vehicle allegedly used to transport prohibited food products, valued at Rs 7 lakh, was seized.

The action has caused concern among food businesses in the city, with the FDA making it clear that violations of food safety, hygiene and regulatory norms will not be tolerated.
