Pune: Final Phase Nears For Wagholi Water Supply Scheme; Trial Expected Soon
Wagholi, 24th June 2025: The Wagholi augmented water supply scheme, implemented by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), has entered its final phase. The only remaining task is the installation of a transformer on the riverbed. Once this is completed, a trial run will be conducted, after which water supply is expected to begin.
The PMRDA initiated work on the said scheme in 2019. However, progress was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. The project is aimed at providing water to the rapidly growing localities of Wagholi and Awhalwadi while water for the scheme is being sourced from the bund at Vadhu.
The project faced several obstacles, especially in laying the pipeline, with work being halted at multiple locations. Despite these delays, the pipeline work has now been completed. According to PMRDA officials, aside from the transformer, all major components of the project are finished.
Speaking on the status, PMRDA engineer Vivek Vispute stated that the transformer installation has received approval and is likely to be completed within the next 8 to 10 days. “Once that’s done, we’ll conduct testing and subsequently begin the actual water supply,” he added further.
Meanwhile, work is ongoing on the larger Bhama Askhed water project, which is expected to take another two to three years to complete. Once operational, it will provide a more ample and consistent water supply to Wagholi and surrounding areas.
