Pune, February 9, 2021: A racket of cheating youths by arranging fake marriages has been exposed by the local crime branch (LCB) of Pune Rural Police. Nine women and two men of the gang have been arrested.

The accused persons have been identified as Jyoti Ravindra Patil (35) of Kesnand Fata Wagholi, Vidya Satish Khandale (27) of Padmavati, Mahananda Tanaji Kasle (39) of Kale Padal in Hadapsar, Rupali Subhash Banpatte (37), Kalawati Subhash Banpatte (25), Sarika Sanjay Giri (33), all residents of Vadarwadi, Swati Dharma Sable (24) of Bhekrai Nagar, Mona Nitin Saluke (28) of Manjari, Payal Ganesh Sable (28) of Gadad in Khed taluka, Digambar Jagannath Bhamre (27) of Manjari and Satish Rangnath Zamre (30) of Dhayari.

Ganesh Arjun Sawale (32) of Divad in Maval taluka has lodged a complaint against them at Vadgaon Maval police station.

According to the police, Jyoti Patil and the two accused men used to search for aged men who were finding it difficult to get married. They would take Rs two lakh to three lakh from such men and get them married to one of the women accused. The bride would escape within a week under the pretext of going to her mother’s place, informed Police Inspector Padmakar Ghanwat of the LCB.

Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Kale said that in many cases the women would decamp with valuables when the family members were not in the house. People did not approach the police fearing reputation of their family would be tarnished.

On January 21, Jyoti Patil and other accused women in the case proposed Vidya as Sonali Machhindra Jadhav and got her married to Ganesh Sawale at Alandi. They took Rs 2.4 lakh from him for the wedding. When Sonali came to stay with Sawale, he found that she would talk to one Sonya Rasal for hours every day. After realizing that he had been cheated, Sawale and his family members kept an eye on her movements.

On February 8, they learnt that the people who helped her get married would come to take her back and they also planned to steal valuables.

Accordingly, Sawale informed the LCB and when the accused persons arrived, they were arrested. Police recovered Rs 20,00 which Sonali (Vidya) had stolen from Sawale’s house. They have been handed over to Vadgaon Maval police station for further investigation.

The action was taken under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Abhinav Deshmukh by a team led by Police Inspector Ghanwat.
