Pune Gangster Gaja Marne Gets Biryani in Police Van; 5 Cops Suspended After Video Goes Viral
Pune, 13th May 2025: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Tuesday ordered the suspension of five personnel, including an assistant inspector and four constables, after a video surfaced showing gangster Gajanan alias Gaja Marne being served mutton biryani inside a police van.
The footage, which went viral on social media, appears to capture the police team handing over a packet of biryani to Marne while transporting him from Yerwada Central Jail to Sangli District Jail on March 3.
Marne, who was arrested on February 24 along with his associates for allegedly assaulting a software engineer during Shiv Jayanti celebrations on February 19 in Kothrud, has been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and was lodged at Yerwada prison.
According to Police Commissioner Kumar, the transfer to Sangli jail was initiated to prevent any possibility of preferential treatment and to ensure tighter custody. “The decision to shift him was made to avoid any undue privileges in Yerwada jail and to maintain discipline,” Kumar said.
The incident in question took place en route to Sangli, where the police escort reportedly halted at a roadside dhaba near Satara. “The officers purchased mutton biryani and served it to Marne inside the official police vehicle,” said a senior officer familiar with the matter. He also confirmed that a luxury car was seen trailing the police van during the transfer.
An internal probe is now underway, and disciplinary action has been initiated against the escort team for breaching standard operating procedures. The video has sparked outrage and raised questions over the integrity of custodial protocols.
Police sources indicated that further departmental action could follow after a detailed inquiry.
