Pune: Grandfather Tries to Sexually Assault 9-year-old Granddaughter in Parvati Area; Angry Residents Protest, Demand Handover of Accused
Pune, 6th May 2026: A large crowd of angry residents staged protests outside the Parvati and Swargate police stations late on Tuesday night following the alleged attempt to rape a nine-year-old girl by her 50-year-old grandfather in a hutment area.
The incident occurred around 6 pm when the man allegedly tried to sexually assault his granddaughter. Alert neighbours intervened promptly, thrashed the accused, and alerted the police. Officers from the Parvati and Swargate police stations rushed to the spot and took the man into custody.
However, local residents, who had gathered in large numbers at the site, demanded that the suspect be handed over to them. As tempers flared, a significant crowd later marched to the two police stations and sat on the roads, blocking vehicular movement in the area.
Heavy police bandobast was deployed at both stations as officers attempted to pacify the protesters and restore normalcy. The Parvati police formally detained the grandfather and began recording statements from women who had witnessed the attempted assault.
Police said they initiated the legal procedure in the matter and the victim was sent for medical test at Sassoon Hospital.
The protests continued past midnight, with demonstrators blocking roads in the vicinity of the police stations.
