Pune, 28th April 2024: Maharashtra has seen an uptick in heatstroke cases, with nearly 100 cases reported across the state in the 11 days since April 16, according to data from the health department disclosed on Saturday. This brings the total number of cases in the state to 184 thus far.

Despite the increase in reported cases, no suspected or confirmed heatstroke casualties have been documented in Maharashtra to date. A health department official provided insights into the distribution of cases, stating, “Of the 184 heatstroke cases reported in the state, the highest numbers have been recorded in Dhule (20), followed closely by Thane (19), Nashik (17), and Wardha (16),” based on the available data.

Heatstroke is considered the most severe heat-related ailment, occurring when the body loses its ability to regulate temperature, resulting in a rapid increase in body temperature and the failure of the sweating mechanism. In cases of heatstroke, body temperature can surge to 106°F or higher within a span of 10-15 minutes.

The recent surge in cases coincides with the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in the state, with political parties actively campaigning throughout the day. Voting has already concluded in some districts under phases 1 and 2 of the election process.

Health officials attribute the rise in cases to the early onset of summer and temperatures exceeding the 40°C mark in several districts across the state. On April 27, 17 out of 32 IMD stations reported maximum temperatures above 40°C. Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services for the Pune region, commented, “We issued an advisory at the onset of the summer season, recommending avoidance of public gatherings during peak heat hours. With temperatures on the rise, we anticipate further increases in heat-related ailments, particularly in May.”

To mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses, the health department advises people to avoid outdoor activities during the noon and afternoon hours. Dr. Pawar emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, especially for individuals with diabetes or kidney-related issues. Recommendations include consuming lemon juice, kokam sarbat, or plain water to maintain hydration levels during hot weather conditions. Dr. Pawar oversees state health services and stresses the significance of preventive measures to safeguard public health.
