Pune: Heavy Vehicles Flout PCMC Entry Curbs; Over 90,000 Booked in 9 Months, Rs 11.9 Crore in Fines Collected
Pimpri Chinchwad, 19th October 2026: Trucks, trailers and other heavy vehicles continue to ply on Pimpri Chinchwad’s roads despite time-based entry restrictions, slowing traffic on key routes and increasing accident risks. Traffic police took action against 90,606 vehicles for violations between January and September 2026, recovering fines of more than Rs 11.90 crore.
An industrial hub, Pimpri Chinchwad sees substantial goods movement from industrial areas in Bhosari, Talegaon, Chakan, Ranjangaon, Supa, Ahilyanagar and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Mumbai, Pune and other destinations. Heavy vehicle movement during morning and evening peak hours often causes congestion at major junctions, affecting office-goers, students and two-wheeler riders.
Heavy vehicles are barred from entering designated routes in the Pimpri Chinchwad police commissionerate between 8am and noon and from 4pm to 9pm. However, many drivers continue to flout the restrictions. When a heavy vehicle gets stuck in traffic, it creates long queues, while attempts by two-wheeler riders to squeeze through narrow gaps or drive on the wrong side increase the risk of accidents.
“Restrictions on heavy vehicles have been imposed to ensure smooth traffic flow, but some drivers continue to violate the rules. Serious accidents have also occurred in some areas because heavy vehicles entered restricted zones. Strict action is being taken against violators,” said Vikrant Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Pimpri Chinchwad.
While a complete ban on heavy vehicles is impractical given the city’s industrial freight requirements, strict enforcement of time restrictions is essential. Dedicated freight routes, adequate parking facilities, alternative roads and better connectivity between industrial areas could help ease the pressure on the city’s road network.
