Katraj, 16th June 2024: A young woman died in Pune after being hit by two Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses. Ironically, despite wearing a helmet, she lost her life in the double collision. It is reported that the helmet became separated from her head following the first accident, which occurred on Saturday (15th June) evening at Katraj Chowk.

The deceased has been identified as Shweta Chandrakant Limkar, aged 25 and a resident of Kagal, Kolhapur. She worked at a company in Khed Shivapur, which led her to settle in Pune. The bus driver has been detained by Bharati Vidyapeeth Police, and a case was registered late at night.

According to police reports, Shweta was returning home from work when she was struck by a bus bound for Mahabaleshwar at Katraj Chowk. Despite wearing a helmet, it became detached from her head due to the impact, as the strap wasn’t fastened properly. She fell onto the road, and a bus travelling from Sangli to Swargate subsequently ran over her head, causing traffic congestion on the road.

The Katraj-Kondhwa road has become increasingly hazardous for traffic. Just two days prior, a contract worker repairing a PMPML bus was found dead after being caught between two buses. Pune has witnessed a rise in serious accidents recently. Following the Kalyani Nagar incident, where a drunk minor speeding in a Porsche killed two young IT engineers, there have been around 20 accidental deaths in various incidents across the city. Speeding and irresponsible behaviour are contributing factors to this surge in serious accidents.
