Pune: Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro Launch Likely in September First Week
Pune, 25th August 2026: The wait for the much-anticipated Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro service could soon end, with the state government likely to inaugurate the first phase in the first week of September.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the service online, according to sources.
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) cleared passenger operations on the 12-station Man-Mahalunge/Balewadi stretch on July 23, paving the way for the launch. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) subsequently wrote to the state government seeking a date for the inauguration.
The Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar corridor will be opened in two phases. The first will connect Man to Balewadi, while the second will cover Baner High Street to Shivajinagar. Metro trains on the approved stretch can operate at a maximum speed of 80 kmph.
The clearance was issued after safety inspections, trials and compliance with prescribed standards, officials said.
Sources said the Chief Minister’s Office had sought the Prime Minister’s availability for the inauguration, as previous Pune Metro phases were also inaugurated by Modi.
“Our priority is to start the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro service at the earliest. We had written to the Chief Minister’s Office regarding the launch. The service is likely to start in the first week of next month,” a senior PMRDA official said.
The corridor is expected to provide a major public transport link between the Hinjewadi IT hub and central Pune, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters and IT employees.
