Pune, 30th May 2026: A 38-year-old engineer has been arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his wife, an Assistant Police Inspector (API) with Pune Police, by strangling her with a scarf following a domestic dispute at the police officers’ residential quarters in Khadki.

The accused, identified as Yogesh Madhav Beri, a resident of Talegaon Dabhade, was arrested after the incident, which took place around 9.30 pm at the officers’ quarters in the Khadki Bazaar police colony on Wednesday. A case of attempt to murder has been registered against him at the Khadki police station based on a complaint lodged by the woman officer.

The complainant is posted with the Special Branch of Pune Police, while the accused works as an engineer in a private company. The couple has two children.

According to the police, Beri had allegedly been harassing his wife for the past several months by suspecting her character. Distressed by the alleged harassment, the woman officer had filed a divorce petition in the family court at Shivajinagar.

Police said the accused had been living separately for the past few days but still possessed a key to the residence in the police colony. On Wednesday night, when the officer returned home, Beri was allegedly hiding inside the house. He allegedly threw ash into her eyes and then attempted to strangle her with a scarf.

The officer raised an alarm, prompting residents of the colony to rush to the spot. The residents intervened, rescued her and restrained the accused before informing the police.

Beri was subsequently arrested and booked for attempt to murder. Further investigation is being carried out by Police Sub-Inspector Renuka Galfade.
