Pune: International Symposium to mark “UNESCO’s 2023 International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda”

Camp, 19th May 2023: This year Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce organized an International Symposium to mark UNESCO’s 2023 International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

Dr. Aftab Anwar Shaikh, Principal, Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce welcomed the audience consisting of international students from as many as sixteen countries, travel agents, tour operators, the business community and media.

 He stressed the importance of such an International Symposium to share with the large audience what the people of Rwanda had to go through in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide. 

The Key note address was delivered by Clarence Fernandes, Chairman , Rwanda Renaissance who explained how the 1994 Genocide was triggered off and how under the able guidance and astute leadership of His Excellency, President Paul Kagame the country has now become one of the most prosperous and well developed countries not just in Africa but in the world.

Santo Ochan Modi Tombe, President, Association of African Students of India , Pune Chapter remarked : “The Symposium was great and pointed out how Rwanda has turned around through repentance and forgiveness.”

Presidents of Afghan Students Association of India and Secretary of FISA also spoke at the event. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Gulab Pathan, Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology at Poona College. 

A Fellowship over refreshments followed which then brought down the curtain to an impressive and educative Symposium.
