Pune jailbreak: Five criminals escaped from Yerwada temporary jail

Yerwada, 16 July 2020: In a major security breach at a temporary jail located near the Yerwada Central Prison, five criminals escaped early morning today. They had cut the window grill to escape from the first floor of the building. Police said that three of them were charged under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Those who fled have been identified as Devgan Ajinath Chavan and Ganesh Ajinath Chavan, both residents of Boravke Nagar in Daund taluka, Akshay Kondakya Chavan of Lingali Malwadi in Daund taluka, Anjikya Uttam Kamble of Sahakarnagar, Tillekarwadi in Haveli taluka and Sunny Tyrone Pinto of Kalewadi. Now an FIR has been registered against them at Yerwada police station, Pune city police. Assistant Police Inspector Balbhim Nanaware is further investigating the case.

According to police, Daund police station has registered MCOCA case against Devgan, Akshay and Ganesh. Extortion case registered against Kamble at Lonikalbhor police station and theft case is registered against Pinto at Wakad police station.

The infectious disease caused by Coronavirus (COVID19) has created a health emergency in the state. A lockdown has been issued across the state to control the spread of the virus. Sunil Ramanand, Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Maharashtra state, based in Pune, had requested the Pune district administration for temporary jail to keep new accused persons in quarantine there.

 

Therefore, in May the backward class girls’ hostel, located in front of Press Colony, near Yerwada jail, was acquired and declared as a temporary jail. Pune city police were tasked to provide 24 hours of police security for the temporary jail premises.
