Pune: Kalyani Nagar Residents Urge PMC to Stop Issuing Licenses to Footpath Hawkers

Kalyani Nagar, 8th May 2025: Residents of Kalyani Nagar have raised strong objections to the increasing number of licensed hawkers occupying footpaths in their locality, citing serious pedestrian safety concerns and hygiene issues. Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar (TSKN), representing the residents, has formally requested Pune Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale to halt the issuance of new licenses to footpath vendors in the area.
In a letter submitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) today, TSKN stated that footpaths across major avenues in Kalyani Nagar have become overcrowded, forcing pedestrians to walk on the roads amidst fast-moving traffic.
“The continual rise in the issuance of licenses to footpath vendors has left hardly any space for pedestrians. This poses a constant risk to their safety as they are forced to walk on busy roads,” TSKN said in its communication to the PMC.
TSKN also pointed out that many hawkers do not adhere to PMC’s guidelines regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and space usage. The group claimed that the presence of these stalls has resulted in noise pollution, littering, and an overall decline in the quality of life for residents.
“The hawkers are creating unhygienic conditions and violating norms. We are not against livelihoods, but there must be a balance between public safety and urban regulation,” said Rachna Aggarwal, Chairperson of TSKN.
She added, “We urge the PMC to immediately stop issuing further licenses to vendors in Kalyani Nagar. This step will go a long way in ensuring pedestrian safety and restoring order on our footpaths.”
TSKN’s appeal comes amid growing concerns across Pune about the unregulated expansion of street vending in residential areas. The group has also appreciated the PMC’s past support and urged for timely intervention.
