Pune: Khadakwasla Dam Releases 2,140 Cusecs Into Mutha River; Panshet 94% Full
Pune, 27th July 2026: The Khadakwasla Dam began releasing 2,140 cusecs of water into the Mutha River at 7:30 am on Monday (July 27) following a rapid rise in its water level and heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division said.
The discharge was initiated through the dam’s spillway as the reservoir reached 100% of its storage capacity. Officials said the discharge could be increased or reduced depending on rainfall and inflow conditions.
“Due to the rapid rise in the water level of Khadakwasla Dam and heavy rainfall in the catchment area, a discharge of 2,140 cusecs into the Mutha River has been started through the dam’s spillway from 7:30 am today. Depending on the rainfall and inflow, the discharge may subsequently be reduced or increased,” the Executive Engineer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division said in an advisory.
The official urged citizens not to enter the Mutha River and asked people to immediately shift any material, equipment or livestock from the riverbed to safer locations.
“Citizens are requested not to enter the riverbed. Any material or livestock present in the riverbed should be immediately shifted to a safe location. Residents in low-lying areas should also be alerted and necessary precautionary measures taken,” the engineer said.
Meanwhile, Panshet Dam was 94.11% full as of 6 am on Monday, with continued rainfall in its catchment area and an inflow of 330 cusecs. The irrigation department warned that water could be released from the hydroelectric power station or over the dam’s spillway if required to regulate the reservoir level.
“Panshet Dam is currently 94% full and a substantial inflow is being received due to continuous rainfall in the catchment area. Considering the inflow and rainfall, discharge may be started through the hydroelectric power station and, if necessary, over the dam’s spillway,” the Executive Engineer said.
Residents along the Mutha River have been advised to stay away from the riverbed and move water pumps, agricultural equipment, other material and livestock to safe locations.
The latest data from the Khadakwasla dam complex showed that Khadakwasla Dam was at 100% capacity, while Panshet was at 94.11%, Warasgaon at 87.43% and Temghar at 74.77% as of 6 am on Monday.
The four reservoirs together held 25.98 TMC of water, equivalent to 89.11% of their combined capacity. The total inflow into the four dams was recorded at 1,207 million cubic feet (mcft).
The data showed that the four-dam storage was slightly lower than the corresponding figure last year, when the reservoirs collectively held 26.14 TMC, or 89.68% of their combined capacity.
The Khadakwasla Dam has already released a cumulative 2.92 TMC of water over its spillway, according to the latest irrigation department data.
The irrigation department has appealed to citizens, particularly those living in low-lying areas and along the Mutha River, to remain vigilant and cooperate with the administration and Water Resources Department.
