Pune: Khadakwasla Dam Water Discharge Raised to 27,203 Cusecs as Reservoir Reaches Full Capacity Amid Heavy Rain

Pune, 8th July 2026: The Khadakwasla Irrigation Division early Wednesday morning sharply increased water discharge from the Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River after the reservoir reached full capacity following heavy rainfall in its catchment area.

According to the Executive Engineer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the discharge from the dam’s spillway was increased to 27,203 cusecs at 5:30 am due to the rapid rise in the reservoir level caused by extremely heavy rainfall. Officials said the discharge may be increased or reduced further depending on rainfall intensity and inflows into the reservoir.

The release was carried out in a phased manner through the early hours of Wednesday to safely regulate the reservoir level. The discharge pattern was as follows:
12:00 am to 1:00 am: 842 cusecs
1:00 am to 1:30 am: 1,684 cusecs
1:30 am to 2:30 am: 3,424 cusecs
2:30 am to 3:15 am: 6,634 cusecs
3:15 am to 3:45 am: 14,393 cusecs
3:45 am to 5:30 am: 22,880 cusecs
From 5:30 am onwards: 27,203 cusecs
The irrigation department has appealed to citizens to avoid entering the Mutha riverbed and immediately remove livestock, vehicles, machinery, or any other materials from the riverbed and low-lying areas. Local authorities have also been asked to alert residents living along the river and ensure all necessary precautionary measures are taken.

As of 6:00 am on Wednesday, Khadakwasla Dam had received 101 mm of rainfall during the previous 24 hours. The reservoir is holding 1.97 TMC of water and has reached 100% of its storage capacity, with an inflow of 1,079 mcft. A total of 0.26 TMC of water has been released over the spillway so far.

The remaining dams in the Khadakwasla project also received heavy rainfall during the same period. Panshet Dam recorded 171 mm, Varasgaon Dam received 189 mm, and Temghar Dam recorded the highest rainfall at 245 mm.

The combined inflow into the four dams stood at 3,637 mcft, while the total storage reached 13.97 TMC, equivalent to 47.92% of the combined storage capacity.

During the corresponding period last year, the four reservoirs together held 19.55 TMC, or 67.08% of their total storage capacity.
