Pune, 18th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has admitted that nearly 32 per cent of the city’s water supply is being lost due to leakages in the distribution system. According to civic officials, around 7 TMC of water is wasted annually because of these leakages.

The information was shared by the PMC water supply department in a written reply to a query raised by corporator Datta Bahirat during the general body meeting.

According to PMC data, Pune’s population, including newly merged villages, has increased from 44.42 lakh in 2017 to 77.76 lakh in 2025-26. With the rising population, the city’s water demand has also increased significantly.

As per the norms of the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority, urban areas require a minimum supply of 135 litres of water per person per day. The PMC stated that Pune required 16.96 TMC of water in 2017-18 and was receiving that amount at the time. However, the city’s water requirement has now risen to 21.03 TMC for 2025-26.

Despite the increased demand, the Water Resources Department has sanctioned only a 14.61 TMC water quota for Pune this year. Civic officials, however, admitted that the PMC is currently drawing more water than the sanctioned quota to meet the city’s growing needs.

The administration said leakages identified through citizens’ complaints, routine inspections and field checks are being repaired immediately. It also stated that water meters are being installed on major pipelines and property connections to help control leakages and reduce water wastage.
