Pune, 20th June 2025: With monsoon-triggered illnesses on the rise, the Maharashtra government has once again enforced its price cap on dengue ELISA tests, limiting the cost to ₹600. The rule, which has been in place since 2016, is intended to ensure that citizens have access to affordable diagnostic services, especially during the current surge in dengue and chikungunya cases.

However, reports indicate that several private diagnostic labs continue to flout this rule, charging patients between ₹800 and ₹1,100 for each test. Taking serious note of this, the state health department has issued new instructions to both public and private healthcare facilities, warning them against overcharging and demanding strict compliance with the cap.

As of mid-June, Pune has logged 169 suspected dengue cases and 8 confirmed infections, in addition to 8 chikungunya cases. With the early onset of the monsoon intensifying the health threat, authorities are pushing for timely and affordable testing to contain the spread.

In Pune, the local civic body is also stepping up enforcement. Dr. Nina Borade, Chief Health Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), said all registered hospitals and laboratories have been directed to follow the mandated pricing. “We appeal to the public to remain vigilant and report any overcharging. Testing must remain accessible, especially during this high-risk season,” she emphasized.

To report violations, citizens can contact the PMC through [email protected] or call 020-25501215.
