Pune: Maharashtra Schools Told to Hold 4 Parent-Teacher Meets Every Year

Pune, 31st August 2026: Schools across Maharashtra will now have to conduct four structured parent-teacher meetings every academic year, with the education department directing schools to hold the sessions preferably on the first Saturday of July, October, January and April.

The directive, issued by the education commissionerate on August 27, applies to primary and secondary schools across all mediums and managements. The meetings are aimed at making parent interaction more meaningful and improving their participation in their children’s education.

The meetings will focus on students’ academic progress, attendance, learning difficulties, health, nutrition, reading habits, home study environment, behaviour and participation in school activities. Parents will also be briefed about government schemes, school activities, annual plans and competitions.

The department said regular interaction would help teachers better understand a child’s family and learning environment, while enabling parents to provide appropriate support at home. The initiative also seeks greater parental involvement in foundational literacy and numeracy under the Nipun Maharashtra campaign.

However, the move has drawn concern from teachers, who said schools are already dealing with additional administrative responsibilities. Teacher representative Girish Samant said repeated mandatory activities could eat into teaching time, particularly as teachers are handling census and Special Intensive Revision-related duties.

Samant questioned the need for a uniform approach and said schools should have greater flexibility in deciding how parent meetings are conducted. “If the objective of the parent meeting is good, decisions regarding it should be left to the schools,” he said, stressing the need to give teachers adequate time to focus on classroom teaching.

The education department has directed headmasters, teachers and school management committees to ensure parent participation and submit consolidated reports of the meetings periodically.
