Pune, 8th January 2025: Mahindra has unveiled a cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at its Chakan plant, marking a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward sustainable and innovative mobility solutions. This state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to producing the next generation of Electric Origin SUVs.

Strategically located within Mahindra’s expansive 2.83 km² Chakan hub—renowned as one of India’s largest greenfield manufacturing sites—the facility operates as a water-positive unit powered entirely by renewable energy. This initiative aligns with Mahindra’s commitment to green manufacturing practices. The company has earmarked ₹4,500 crore from its ₹16,000 crore investment plan for FY22–FY27 to support EV powertrain development, vehicle production, and cutting-edge technologies at the Chakan plant.

A Next-Generation EV Manufacturing Hub

Mahindra’s new EV facility embodies a fully automated, integrated manufacturing ecosystem designed for precision, quality, and efficiency.

1) Advanced Operations: Spanning 88,000 m², the plant includes a fully automated press shop, AI-powered body shop, and one of the country’s most advanced robotic paint shops, all monitored through an IoT-based “Nerve Center” that provides real-time process insights and traceability.

2) Automation and Technology: With over 500 robots, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for material handling, the plant integrates Industry 4.0 technology to enhance safety, speed, and reliability.

3) Inclusive Workforce: The facility targets a 25% gender diversity ratio, fostering an inclusive and future-ready work culture.

Cutting-Edge Battery Assembly Unit
The battery assembly unit at Chakan is designed to set global benchmarks in efficiency and innovation:

1) Compact and Automated: One of the world’s most compact battery assembly lines, the unit leverages patented processes and lean assembly techniques for optimal performance.

2) High-Performance Batteries: The plant employs advanced technologies such as hidden cell terminal welding and patented pallet designs to ensure durability, insulation, and precision.

3) Stringent Testing: Multi-layered testing simulates real-world conditions, ensuring batteries meet IP67 ingress protection standards and deliver robust performance with automated fault detection systems.

Contributing to Sustainable Mobility Goals

This initiative reinforces Mahindra’s commitment to “Make in India for the World” and aligns with India’s targets under COP26 for reducing carbon emissions by 2030. The Chakan facility not only strengthens Mahindra’s EV portfolio but also contributes to shaping a cleaner and more sustainable automotive future.

With this launch, Mahindra continues to drive innovation, setting new benchmarks for EV manufacturing in India while paving the way for a greener tomorrow.
