Pimpri-Chinchwad, 6th March 2023: The Pune metro project inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing hurdles. The metro management had asked to complete the work by the end of December 2022.

However, due to Covid-19, the completion of this work was delayed. As a result, the cost of the project has increased by Rs 1,800 crores. In addition, the extension of the Pimpri to Nigdi metro line has not yet been scheduled. Therefore, there is a possibility of adding more to the cost increase.

Pune Mahametro started the metro work from Pimpri-Chinchwad. For the first time, Metro claimed to complete the work in Pimpri-Chinchwad Accordingly, the works were taken up rapidly. However, during the two years of Covid-19, the work of Metro got stuck. However, the Pimpri to Phugewadi Metro track was constructed with difficulty by the Metro management.

Mahametro claims that the Pimpri to Dapodi route is 100 per cent complete. However, the work of Dapodi Junction is still incomplete. So currently the metro runs only up to Phugewadi. Along with this, some works in other junctions have been stopped while works in some junctions are going on at present. Descending staircase to Morwadi at Morwadi Junction is not yet completed. Architectural, technical, and lift works are also incomplete at Sant Tukaramnagar and Kasarwadi junctions. Due to this, the metro work is getting delayed.

Metro had claimed to complete the work in December 2022. However, there is a long delay in this work. Therefore, the cost of the metro is increasing year by year. Now the question is being raised when the pending works will be completed.

While the metro is being developed on the Pimpri to Dapodi route, the citizens of Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi demanded that the metro be extended to Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi. The leaders of all the political parties raised the demand of the citizens.

As per the suggestion of Metro, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has prepared DPR for Pimpri to Nigdi metro extension and sent it for approval of the state government. After the approval of the state government, the DPR is waiting for the approval of the Centre. The central government is also preparing to approve the expanded DPR.

However, the metro junction at Bhakti-Shakti Chowk in Nigdi falls within the boundaries of the Dehu Road Ammunition Factory. The Union Defense Department has kept this proposal pending approval considering the matter to be sensitive. Therefore, the extension of Pimpri to Nigdi Metro is getting delayed.
