Pune, 2nd November 2026: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has attributed the water leakage reported at Maan Metro Station on Sunday evening to a temporary blockage in a rainwater drainage pipe on the terrace slab of the station’s entry structure. The authority said the blockage had been cleared and that there was no defect in the structural components of the station box or entry structure.

In a statement, Rinaj Pathan, Chief Engineer, PMRDA, explained that the terrace slab of the entry structure is open to the sky. A temporary obstruction in the rainwater drainage pipe prevented water from flowing out, causing rainwater to accumulate on the slab and eventually overflow.
The water then seeped through the gap between the station box and the entry structure and became visible at the mezzanine level, Pathan said.
” The temporary blockage in the drainage pipe has been removed, and rainwater is now draining normally,” the statement said.

PMRDA also maintained that the leakage was caused solely by the temporary obstruction in the drainage pipe and that there was no defect in any structural element of the station box or entry structure.

The explanation follows the circulation of videos on social media showing water dripping from the ceiling at Maan Metro Station during rainfall on Sunday. The visuals showed water accumulating in areas used for passenger movement, with station staff using buckets and floor wipers to remove it.

The incident drew attention because it occurred just two days before the scheduled inauguration of the Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi Metro Line 3. It also prompted questions among residents and IT professionals about the station’s readiness and the checks carried out before passenger services begin.

Metro Line 3 inauguration on November 3

The 23-station Shivajinagar-Hinjawadi Metro Line 3 project is being implemented by PMRDA through a public-private partnership involving Tata Group and Siemens.

The main inauguration ceremony is scheduled to be held at Balewadi Sports Complex on November 3, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expected to attend. Regular passenger services are expected to begin on November 4 at 17 of the corridor’s 23 stations, according to the announced plan.

The project has been promoted as an environment-friendly metro corridor, with features including women locomotive pilots and solar-powered infrastructure.

Questions over station readiness

The leakage incident has raised concerns about the condition of the station ahead of its opening to passengers. Some residents and IT professionals have called for the affected area to be inspected and for the authorities to ensure that drainage, electrical installations, escalators, lifts and other station facilities are functioning safely.
