Pune Metro Witnesses Soaring Passenger Numbers on Extended Routes
Pune, 4th August 2023: Following the commencement of services on the extended routes from Vanaz to Ruby Hall and Pimpri to District Court, Pune Metro has experienced a remarkable increase in ridership.
On Thursday, the number of passengers traveling on these extended routes exceeded 28 thousand by 7 pm. This surge signifies an impressive six-fold rise in the daily ridership compared to pre-expansion figures.
The extension of the Metro services officially began on August 1 at 5 pm, offering commuters the 9.7 km Vanaz to Ruby Hall route and the 13.9 km Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to District Court route.
On the inaugural day, a total of 12,918 passengers utilized the Metro services, while Wednesday witnessed more than 30 thousand passengers opting for the Metro. Notably, on Thursday, until 7 pm, the total count reached 28,698 passengers, further indicating the increasing popularity of the extended service.
Prior to the expansion, the Vanaz to Garware College and Pimpri to Phugewadi lines were operational. The Metro services commenced on March 6 last year, catering to a total of 19,78,160 passengers over the year. This averaged to approximately five thousand passengers daily. However, since the launch of the extended services, the daily ridership has skyrocketed to 30 thousand passengers, a notable six-fold increase. Nevertheless, there is speculation regarding whether the initial surge in passengers will be sustained in the future.
Notably, some of the major stations saw a considerable influx of passengers on Thursday until 7 pm. Ruby Hall witnessed 3,361 passengers, followed by Vanaz with 3,253 passengers, Pimpri with 2,904 passengers, District Court with 2,365 passengers, and Shivajinagar with 2,156 passengers.
The encouraging response to the extended Metro service brings hope for improved public transportation and convenience for the residents of Pune.
