Pune: Most of PMC’s 20 Maternity Homes Lack Sonography Facilities
Pune, 17th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has only three sonography machines available across its healthcare network, leaving patients facing inconvenience and forcing many to pay extra for scans at private centres.
Most of the civic body’s 20 maternity homes do not have sonography facilities. At present, one machine is available at the PMC-run Kamala Nehru Hospital, another at the Pote dispensary in Padmavati under a public-private partnership (PPP), and a third at the Sutar dispensary in Kothrud.
The civic body claims that sonography facilities are also available at three to four other maternity homes. However, these services are intermittently operational, forcing patients to depend largely on a handful of centres, including Kamala Nehru Hospital.
Expanding sonography services will require more than purchasing new machines, as specialist staff are also needed to operate them. The PMC health department has only one radiologist in a Class I post. At some centres, excluding those operating under the PPP model, the civic body’s gynaecologists conduct sonography scans, further limiting the availability of the service.
Meanwhile, pregnant women are eligible for financial assistance of Rs 400 under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM) to undergo scans at private sonography centres in their neighbourhood. The PMC health department has urged eligible women to make use of the facility.
