Pune: Mother Donates Kidney to Save Son in Life-Saving Transplant at Sassoon Hospital
Pune, 2nd January 2026: For nearly two years, a 22-year-old college student from Pune depended on a dialysis machine, his youth overshadowed by failing kidneys and an uncertain future. Diagnosed in January 2023 with complete renal failure due to severe hypertension, doctors informed the family that a kidney transplant was the only way to save his life.
Private treatment costs were beyond the family’s means, making dialysis a painful and ongoing necessity. As the young man’s health steadily declined, his mother watched helplessly — until hope arrived at Sassoon General Hospital, where kidney transplants are offered at minimal cost.
After approaching the hospital, social welfare officers counselled the family about living organ donation. Without hesitation, the mother volunteered to donate one of her kidneys, determined to give her son a chance at a normal life. Medical evaluations confirmed her suitability, and the transplant proposal was processed in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organs Act. Following detailed scrutiny and interviews by the Regional Human Organ Transplant Authority, formal approval was granted.
The surgery was successfully performed by a multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, surgeons, and anaesthetists under the supervision of senior hospital authorities. Doctors reported that both the donor and recipient are recovering well.
