Pune, 7th January 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to construct 4,173 affordable houses under the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in six locations across the city, including Dhanori, Hadapsar, Baner, Kondhwa, Balewadi, and Vadgaon Khurd. Registration for the scheme has officially begun, offering an opportunity for economically weaker sections (EWS) to own homes at affordable rates.

In the first phase of PMAY, the PMC successfully built and distributed 2,918 houses in areas like Vadgaon Budruk, Kharadi, and Hadapsar. These homes were allocated through a transparent lottery system, fulfilling the housing aspirations of thousands of citizens. The inauguration of these houses was carried out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022.

Following the success of the first phase, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0’ in September 2024, prompting state governments to expedite the process of housing allocation under the scheme. However, the registration process in Pune faced delays due to the implementation of the model code of conduct during the recent Maharashtra assembly elections.

With the elections concluded, PMC has resumed work on the initiative, inviting citizens to apply online for the affordable housing scheme. This phase will involve an investment of ₹300 crore to construct the 4,173 houses on land owned by the corporation, significantly reducing costs for the beneficiaries.

City Engineer Prashant Waghmare stated, “The second phase of PMAY will see houses being built in areas like Dhanori, Hadapsar, Baner, Kondhwa, Balewadi, and Vadgaon Khurd. Since these houses are being constructed on PMC-owned land, there is no additional land cost, making them more affordable for citizens. We anticipate an overwhelming response similar to the first phase, as this scheme continues to fulfill the housing dreams of the economically weaker sections.”
