Pune, 29th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Ather Energy Limited to use technology-driven road-impediment data to identify potholes, damaged road stretches and other road-surface issues across Pune.

Under the proposed collaboration, PMC will use aggregated data generated by Ather’s connected electric scooters as an additional digital input to assess road conditions, prioritise repairs and plan targeted maintenance interventions.

According to Ather’s proposal, more than 24,000 Ather scooters are operating in Pune. The company’s connected vehicles use telemetry and sensor-based technology to collect information related to road conditions during routine journeys.

The collaboration will provide PMC with aggregated GPS- and geolocation-based information about road impediments, including potholes, road cuts, speed breakers and other road-surface irregularities. The information is expected to be presented through Road Health Maps, helping civic officials identify locations that may require attention.

The data is expected to help the civic body identify problematic road stretches, prioritise repair work, plan targeted interventions and monitor locations where road-related issues recur. It will supplement, rather than replace, the PMC’s existing road maintenance processes and physical inspections.

No personal customer data to be shared

Under the proposed arrangement, personal data belonging to citizens or Ather customers will not be shared with PMC. The civic body will receive only aggregated geolocation-based information.

The availability of data will depend on the actual movement of Ather scooters across the city. The information is expected to be used alongside field verification by civic officials. Ather’s proposal does not provide an independent guarantee of high accuracy for the automatically collected data.

The MoU will remain in force for one year. During this period, the civic body and Ather will explore how technology and connected-mobility data can support road management and infrastructure planning in Pune.

Officials attend MoU signing

PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair, City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar and Information Technology Department Head Rahul Jagtap were present during the signing.

Ather Energy was represented by Milind Kothekar, Head of Product and Chief of Staff; Dr Surender Singhroha, Corporate, Legal and Public Policy; Rishikesh Pradhan, Senior Product Manager; and Amol Mohite, Government Relations and Policy.

PMC Commissioner on the initiative

Commenting on the collaboration, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said, “Identifying road defects in a timely manner is important for effective road maintenance and commuter safety. The data made available through this collaboration will serve as an additional source of information to identify problematic roads, prioritise repair work and monitor recurring issues. By combining technology-driven information with physical field inspections, the municipal corporation aims to make road management in Pune more data-driven and effective.”
