Pune: Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal Criticizes PMC for Closing Sarasbaug on Bakri Eid, Calls Move Discriminatory

Pune, 9th June 2025: The Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal has strongly criticized the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for closing Sarasbaug on Bakri Eid without proper verification, calling the decision a denial of civil rights and an affront to the Muslim community.
In a press statement issued on Monday, Dr. Shamsuddin Tamboli, president of the Mandal, expressed disappointment that civic officials failed to recognize the discriminatory implications of their actions, equating the move to the revival of inhumane practices similar to untouchability.
Dr. Tamboli highlighted that during important festivals like Ramzan Eid and Bakri Eid, Muslim women, who work hard preparing for the celebrations, seek recreation and relaxation in nearby gardens, cinemas, or entertainment venues. He alleged that the closure of Sarasbaug on the second day of Bakri Eid was intended to prevent Muslim families from visiting the park, prompted by an objectionable letter from a Member of Parliament.
The Mandal’s statement further argued that laws already exist to address violations of public order and that authorities can enforce these regulations without resorting to blanket bans. Dr. Tamboli stated that if concerns exist about the sanctity of temples being affected by non-vegetarian food, restrictions should be imposed on food items, not on people from any community. He condemned the issuance of notices and actions that foster suspicion, hatred, and animosity against the Muslim community, stressing that such measures violate fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
