Pune: NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Swargate Bus Stand Rape Case, Demands Urgent Action

Pune/New Delhi, 26th February 2025: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the shocking rape incident reported at Pune’s Swargate bus depot and has demanded immediate action from the authorities. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, urging swift and decisive measures to ensure justice for the victim.

The 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a stationary Shivshahi bus while waiting for transportation at the Swargate depot on Tuesday early morning. The accused is currently absconding, raising serious concerns about public safety and law enforcement.

NCW’s Directives to Law Enforcement:

In her letter, NCW Chairperson Rahatkar has outlined urgent steps to be taken by the police:

  1. Fair and Time-Bound Investigation – The probe must be conducted without delay or negligence.
  2. Support for the Victim – The survivor should be provided medical assistance, psychological counseling, and security to ensure her well-being.
  3. Swift Arrest of the Accused – The perpetrator should be apprehended at the earliest, and strict legal action under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 must be taken.
  4. Action-Taken Report Submission – A detailed report, including a copy of the FIR, must be submitted to the NCW within three days.

Condemning the heinous crime, the NCW has reiterated its commitment to protecting women’s rights and ensuring such incidents do not go unpunished. The Commission has also urged law enforcement agencies to implement stringent measures to enhance women’s safety in public spaces.

The NCW will closely monitor the progress of this case and take further action if necessary.
