Pune: NCW Team Visits Pune to Examine WNS Murder Case and Workplace Safety Gaps

Pune, 14th January 2025: A Fact-Finding Team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) has arrived in Pune to investigate the brutal murder of a woman employed at WNS in Viman Nagar, Pune. The shocking incident, which occurred in the company’s parking lot, involved the victim being with a sharp weapon by a colleague over a monetary dispute. Despite the presence of several onlookers, no one intervened, shedding light on the troubling phenomenon of the bystander effect.

The Chairperson of the NCW, Vijaya Rahatkar, has taken suo motu cognizance of the crime, constituting a high-level Fact-Finding Committee to probe the incident. The team comprises:

Meenakshi Negi, Member Secretary, National Commission for Women.
Dr. B.K. Sinha, Former Director General of Police, Haryana.
R. Sreelekha, Former Director General of Police, Kerala.
The committee, which reached Pune today, has initiated a comprehensive inquiry. Over the next few days, it will engage with key stakeholders, visit the crime scene, and evaluate the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

Scope of Investigation
Meetings with Authorities: The team will meet with the Commissioner of Police, District Authorities, the Investigation Officer, and other officials to gather insights into the case.
Examination of the Incident: A detailed analysis will be conducted to understand how the crime occurred in broad daylight despite the presence of numerous bystanders.
Interactions with Victim’s Circle: The committee will speak to the victim’s friends and colleagues to uncover potential motives and background information.
Site Visit: The team will visit the crime scene to assess security measures and identify lapses.
Engagement with IT/BPO Associations: Representatives of employee associations will be consulted to address concerns related to workplace safety in the sector.
The NCW Fact-Finding Committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations within 10 working days.
