Bandhan, 6th March 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install additional signboards at the Chandani Chowk multilevel flyover to address confusion among motorists. The move comes after several commuters raised concerns about inadequate signage, making navigation difficult.

A recent survey conducted by PMC engineers confirmed the need for better directional signs at various points on the flyover. According to officials, several key destinations—including Chandani Chowk, NDA, Kothrud, Mulshi, Bavdhan, Satara, and Mumbai—are not clearly marked, leaving drivers uncertain about the correct routes.

“A number of complaints were received from citizens who found it challenging to navigate the flyover. During our survey last month, we observed that more than 50 motorists had to stop and ask for directions to Mulshi, Mumbai, Kothrud, and Satara Road. Some signboards do exist, but they were placed incorrectly by the contractor. We have now identified the appropriate locations and have initiated a tender process to install new, properly positioned signs,” a PMC project department official stated.

The issue is particularly problematic for motorists traveling between Kothrud, Bavdhan, and Pashan, as well as those using the Satara-Mumbai highway. The road design requires drivers from Kothrud to take NDA Road to reach Bavdhan, while those coming from Satara must navigate under the NDA bridge before taking a left-side bridge to Bavdhan and onward to Kothrud. Without proper signage, many drivers miss turns and struggle to find the right routes.

Commuters have expressed frustration over the situation, reporting that the lack of visible and properly placed signboards has led them to take wrong turns and waste time backtracking. Many have also pointed out that the existing signs are either too small or not strategically positioned, making them difficult to notice while driving.

The Chandani Chowk flyover, built at a cost of ₹865 crore by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), was designed to ease congestion at one of Pune’s busiest intersections. It connects key routes, including Hinjewadi IT Park, the Mumbai-Bangalore bypass, Mulshi Road, Paud Road, and Pashan Road. The project was inaugurated in August 2023, six years after the foundation stone was laid by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on August 27, 2017.

With PMC now taking corrective action, commuters are optimistic that the installation of proper signage will improve traffic flow and reduce confusion at the flyover.
