Pune: NGT Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Moshi Tragedy, Directs PCMC, MPCB to File Affidavits

Pune, 14th July 2026: Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports report on the July 8 Moshi waste depot tragedy that killed nine people, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday directed the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to file their affidavits in the matter.

A bench comprising judicial member Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh and expert member Sudhir Kumar Chaturvedi sought responses from the civic body and the pollution control board during the hearing. The bench also asked PCMC’s counsel whether the administrative building of the waste-to-energy (WTE) plant was situated within the premises of the Moshi waste depot.

Lawyers representing both the PCMC and the MPCB appeared before the tribunal and sought time to submit their replies. The tribunal granted the request and directed both authorities to file their affidavits by August 20.
