Pune: Onion Prices Drop Significantly By Rs 20 Per Kg Following Increased Supply From Farmers
Market Yard, 25th December 2024: Onion prices have dropped by ₹20 per kilogram in just one week, offering much-needed relief to consumers. This reduction follows a surge in the arrival of the New Red Onion (Halvi) variety in local markets.
The recent decrease in prices is attributed to the increased supply of onions, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the possibility of unseasonal rains. This has prompted farmers to expedite the sale of their produce. The wholesale price of onions now ranges from ₹15 to ₹30 per kilogram, depending on the quality. Retail prices for new red onions vary between ₹30 and ₹50 per kilogram.
Just a week ago, retail prices were significantly higher, with onions selling between ₹50 and ₹70 per kilogram, depending on the grade. In the wholesale Market Yard, onions from several regions, including Shrigonda in Ahilyanagar, Karjat, Jamkhed, Ashti in Beed district, Karmala in Solapur district, and Shirur taluka in Pune district, have flooded the market.
The increased supply is evident, with approximately 80 to 100 trucks of onions being delivered to the market daily. Last week, the wholesale price was ₹40 to ₹50 per kilogram, marking a dramatic price drop of nearly 50% in just one week.
