Pune: Opium Worth Over Rs 1 Crore Seized, Three Arrested

Pune 21st August 2023: The Anti Narcotics Cell of Pune City Police has busted a major racket involving smuggling of opium in the city and three accused have been arrested in the case. The police have seized opium worth Rs 1.16 Crore from their possession.

According to the police, the patrolling team of Anti Narcotics Cell had received information about a person selling opium in the Gokulnagar area on Katraj-Kondhwa road. The police team laid a trap and an accused identified as Sumesh Jairamji Bishnoi (50), a resident of Jodhpur district of Rajasthan who was currently living in Gokulnagar area in Pune was taken into custody.

The police team seized 3. 214 Kg of opium worth Rs 64.28 Lakh from his possession and he was arrested under relevant sections in the case on August 17. During further investigation in the matter, details about the involvement of two more accused were revealed. The police team accordingly nabbed two more accused identified as Chanwandsing Mansing Rajput and Lokendrasingh Mahendrasingh Rajput both residents of Rajasthan in the case. Police have seized a total of 5.816 Kg of opium worth Rs 1.16 lakh from their possession. Both the arrested accused had supplied opium to Sumesh Bishnoi, said police.

A case in this regard has been already registered at Kondhwa Police Station under sections 8(c) and 17(c) of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). Further investigation in the matter is underway.
